Glacier Trilogy - Part 3 (2022) - DE; US
Inspired by the visual metaphor of the sand hourglass and its measuring of the passage of time in a closed system affected by gravity, Theresa Schubert designed a self-organized digital generative video in collaboration with media artist Sage Jenson. The work simulates the melting of a digital glacial ice mass, followed by the emergence of a fluid system meandering over a digital elevation map of a section of the Western Italian Alps, ending with the collecting of water in a lake or sea. The diverse physical properties of water (in a solid state known as ice, in a liquid phase known as water) shape the landscape. The exhalation of visitors will have a direct impact on the melting process of the glacial ice mass as carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors in the exhibition space will be connected to the generative video. This interactive element blurs the lines between the natural and the digital world, at the same time raising awareness of anthropogenic climate change and encouraging the public to a more cautious handling of water as a resource and to engage with nature from a non-anthropocentric perspective.
Bio:
Theresa Schubert is a Berlin-based artist exploring unconventional visions of nature, technology and the self. Her work combines audiovisual and biomedia to conceptual and immersive installations or performances. By means of interdisciplinary methods – such as biohacking, theoretical analysis, performative interpretation and material experimentation – her works question the relation of humans to their environment and evolvement of matter and meaning beyond the Anthropos. More recently, she works with UHD video environments and 3D Laser Scanning to challenge modes of perception and question the human-machine-nature relationship.
Her work has been exhibited at Ars Electronica Linz, Art Laboratory Berlin, KW Berlin, European Media Art Festival, Fondazione Pistoletto, Kapelica Gallery Ljubljana, Museum of Modern Art Vilnius, MMOMA Moscow, or Museum Villa Rot. She was recently awarded with an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica 2021, a STARTS Prize 2021 Honorary Mention and an Award of Distinction at the Japan Media Arts Festival 2022.
